Ukraine sees rise in prices of fruit and vegetables

The price of Ukrainian consumers` fruit and vegetable basket rose by 11.6% during a week between June 4 and June 10, as evidenced by the Fruit & Vegetable index of APK-Inform: Vegetables and Fruit.
The price hike is attributed to the cool and rainy weather, which affects the harvesting and supply of early vegetables, fruit and berries, experts say.
The most significant increase in prices, by 2.2 times within just a week, was recorded for cucumbers that are the most vulnerable to changing weather conditions.
At the same time, the growth in tomato prices was not so sharp, caused not only by weather conditions but also higher export demand for the products.
Price dynamics concerning vegetables included in the ”borsch basket” [borsch is a traditional Ukrainian national soup] have not changed, although the decline in prices has slowed considerably. However, the ”borsch basket” costs decreased by 5.4% during the week due to lower prices for cabbage and carrots. The price of potatoes was down by 6.7%.
Prices of berries have followed the upward trend just as greenhouse vegetables. Cherry prices have gone up by 4.2%, and prices of strawberry grew by 11.1%. In general, the cost of the fruit basket has increased by 1.9%.
