Ukraine may be compelled to introduce retaliatory measures in connection with Turkey`s refusal to increase road freight transport from Ukraine, the Infrastructure Ministry of Ukraine, citing Deputy Minister Yuriy Lavrenyuk`s statement, reported on its website.
Lavrenyuk headed the Ukrainian delegation at a meeting of the joint Ukrainian-Turkish commission on road transport, the report stated.
In particular, Ukraine may decide on the imposition of fee-based transit through its territory for Turkish carriers.
”This is due to the fact that Ukrainian carriers barely transit through Turkey, while Turkish carriers, on the other hand, have transited through Ukraine over 25,000 times in 2015 alone,” Lavrenyuk said.
The Infrastructure Ministry emphasized that it hopes to resolve the issue on road freight transport liberalization with Turkey, otherwise certain action would be required.
As UNIAN reported earlier, the Turkish side has rejected any proposals to increase road freight transport from Ukraine to Turkey, against the backdrop of increasing trade turnover.
”The `parity rates` and `percentage calculations` proposed by the Turkish side, based on the traffic of Turkish transporters, are unacceptable and directly contradict the provisions of international agreements, especially those of the WTO and the treaty between Ukraine and Turkey,” the infrastructure deputy minister was quoted as saying.
