Ukraine gets by without Russian gas for more than 6 months

Ukraine`s First Deputy Economy Minister Yulia Kovaliv noted that Ukraine had started purchasing gas on the market`s terms rather than under existing political agreements.
Within the framework of energy sources diversification, Ukraine has not used direct gas supplies from Russia for more than 230 days, Kovaliv said during the government`s Q&A in the Rada.
”We have not purchased gas from Russia for 231 days,” Kovaliv stated. ”We have started buying it on market terms, rather than under political agreements. That`s why no one has a right to demand from us, as a state, political loyalty or [claim] infringement of national sovereignty.”
The official emphasized that for the first time ever, the government has established a clear market price for gas, which is expected to curb chaos and corruption in the domestic gas market.
As UNIAN reported earlier, Ukraine in January-March 2016 imported 2.647 billion cubic meters of natural gas worth $521.7 million. The entire volume of imported gas came from the European Union.
On March 31, the state-owned Naftogaz reported it had no intention to resume gas purchases from Russia`s Gazprom on April 1, 2016, as the gas price offered by the Russian company for the second quarter of 2016 was higher than that offered by the European suppliers.
