Ukraine accumulates second largest stocks of gas in Europe in underground storage facilities

Ukraine accumulated 16.3 billion cubic meters of natural gas in its gas storage facilities as of September 15, 2014, which was 14%, or 2.2 billion cubic meters, more than on the same date in 2013. These gas resources will be used for the needs of Ukrainian consumers during the 2014-2015 heating season.
According to Ukrtransgaz’s press service, today only Germany has larger gas stocks in Europe, accumulating about 20.1 billion cubic meters, whereas Italy is third, with gas stocks of some 15.6 billion cubic meters.
“Ukraine has the largest underground storage facilities in Europe and is now among leaders in gas stocks in underground storage facilities. Ukrainian underground storage facilities are only 51% full. Germany and Italy have almost no vacant space to pump gas: their storage facilities are over 90% full %,” Ukrtransgaz CEO Ihor Prokopiv said.
“Ukrainian underground storage facilities are a strategic resource for strengthening Europe’s energy security. For Ukraine and our European partners this is a chance of accumulating gas in the summer period when the prices are the lowest. Ukrainian underground storage facilities could also be a powerful tool for creating the European gas reserve,” Naftogaz of Ukraine CEO Andriy Kobolev said.
