South Africa to supply 1 million tonnes of coal to Ukraine

The government signed an agreement to supply 1 million tonnes of coal from South Africa.
Prime Minister Arseniy Yatseniuk said, opening a government meeting on Wednesday, a Ukrinform correspondent reports.
“Militants bombed the main mines, of which we supplied coal to Ukrainian thermal power plants. Therefore, the government has signed an agreement to supply 1 million tonnes of coal from the South African Republic. The first ship is already being loaded,” said Yatseniuk.
The Prime Minister noted that the purchase of coal abroad is much more expensive than domestic production, and longer, but it will allow Ukraine to reduce dependence on gas.
“Finally, we will re-equip our boilers at thermal power plants, switch to coal and challenges in the energy sector will force us to conduct real modernization of the Ukrainian energy sector,” he said.
