Russia`s Buryatia proposes selling Baikal water to China to get more revenue

Governor of the Republic of Buryatia, which is part of Russia`s Siberian Federal District, Vyacheslav Nagovitsyn says the republic is mulling the possibility of selling bottled drinking water from Lake Baikal to China at a price higher than the price of fuel, according to RIA Novosti.
Once implemented, the undertaking will generate enormous revenue to the budget, Nagovitsyn said at a meeting with members of the regional government. He did not elaborate on exact sums of the revenue.
The governor also warned that the world`s producers of drinking water might do anything to hamper the implementation of the project, for example, by creating a negative information background around the idea.
”China offers an unlimited sales market. You can sell anything there … It is important to promote those products that the republic is particularly rich in … the products that we can produce than our domestic market can consume, such as drinking water … Its price is higher than that of a liter of fuel,” Nagovitsyn said.
According to the regional economy ministry, a cooperation agreement has already been signed with 15 Chinese companies and the ministry is drafting proposals to start supplies of environmentally friendly products to China by Buryat companies. The press service of the regional government reported that a trade mission is to be set up in China, according to the governor`s order, tasked with promoting food products [supplied by the Republic] on the Chinese market.
Lake Baikal is a lake of tectonic origin in the southern part of Eastern Siberia. It is also the deepest lake on the planet and the world`s largest natural reservoir of fresh water.
