Chairman of Odesa Regional State Administration Mikheil Saakashvili has said that Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko ordered to bring 1,000 law enforcement officers in Odesa in order to ensure public order in the city during the May holidays.
”The President instructed Head of the National Police and Chief of the National Guard to bring an additional 1,000-strong force in Odesa for the protection of public order in the city,” Saakashvili wrote on Facebook.
On April 26, Saakashvili called on the President to bring the National Guard units in Odesa due to the night events in the city – a demolition of a tent camp set up by the protesters in front of the City Hall against Odesa mayor Hennadiy Trukhanov, as well as an explosion in the Odesa-based branch of Pivdennyi Bank. Saakashvili dubbed the ongoing events as ”signs of a coup.”
He argues that demolition of the tent camp and beating of activists took place ”under the protections of the City Hall,” while the city authorities have blamed the Regional State Administration for the incident.
