”Political game underway”: ex-intel chief forecasts possible scenario of Russia in Donbas

Russian leaders and their troops in Donbas have resorted to blackmail by canceling a scheduled skype conference of the Trilateral Contact Group on Donbas settlement, according to the former head of Ukraine`s Foreign Intelligence Service, Mykola Malomuzh, 112 Ukraine TV channel reports.

In this way they impose on Ukraine their own scenario for the occupied areas of Donetsk and Luhansk regions, said Malomuzh.

”There is an ongoing political game: the militants and the Russian government adopted a strategy to blame the Ukrainian side. They have accused us of violating the agreements and they use this in global bargaining regarding the implementation of the Minsk agreements on the Russian scenario. In particular, this is about recognizing the militants as the official party to the talks, adopting legislation in respect of these areas, and holding elections under control of the Russian Federation. These are the basic conditions that encourage them to abandon further negotiations regarding three disengagement lines, even more so in a broader group,” said Malomuzh.

According to the ex-chief of Ukraine`s intelligence, the militants resort to blackmail, threatening to intensify attacks, in particular in Luhansk region.

”They blackmail the Ukrainian side. It`s mostly about continuing attacks, which they boost, particularly in Luhansk region in the past days. If we go for concessions, there will be less attacks, if we don`t – there will be more. This is the tactic of coercing us to follow the scenario they have plotted in relation to these areas,” said Malomuzh.

Meeting of the Trilateral Contact Group was scheduled for September 30 in a video conference format. However, the meeting will not take place because of the refusal of the representative of the occupied areas of Donbas.
