Investigation into MH17 crash to be completed by year end – Malaysian Prime Minister

Prime Minister of Malaysia Najib Razak has stated that the joint investigation team consisting of representatives of Ukraine, Australia, Belgium, the Netherlands and Malaysia intends to finish before the end of the year the investigation into circumstances of the downing of Malaysian Airlines flight MH17, which crashed in Ukraine in July 2014.

This statement the prime minister made during a joint press conference with Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko in Putrajaya.

”We are considering the reports on criminal investigation and expect the investigation to have been completed by the end of the year,” the presidential press service quoted Razak as saying.

Razak noted that after the publication of the report, representatives of the countries involved in the investigation would have a meeting and coordinate the plan of actions and the order of bringing the perpetrators to justice.

”We want to make sure that those who shot down the civilian aircraft will be brought to liability,” he said.

All 298 people on board were killed in a crash. The passengers were citizens of 10 countries. The majority of victims (196 people) were the citizens of the Netherlands. Among the dead were also 27 Australians.

In order to investigate the tragedy, the joint investigation team was set up on August 7, 2014, including representatives of the prosecutors and other law enforcement bodies of Ukraine, the Netherlands, Belgium, Australia, and Malaysia, as well as representatives of EuroJust.

The Netherlands Safety Board October 13, 2015, issued a report on the causes of the MH17 crash. It was found that the plane was shot down by the Buk anti-aircraft missile.
