Germany to give EUR 6 mln for Donbas residents` food in 2016-2017

Germanys` federal government will allocate EUR 6 million for the implementation of humanitarian projects in 2016-2017 under a UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) humanitarian program aimed at helping people affected by war in Donbas, according to the press office of Germany`s Embassy in Ukraine.
The German government is set to boost support for the FAO`s humanitarian program titled ”Emergency Assistance to Civilians Affected by the Conflict in Eastern Ukraine.”
In 2015, Germany assigned EUR 4.5 million aimed at the FAO`s humanitarian activities in Ukraine.
The provision of staple food for the people affected by the conflict in eastern Ukraine is among the top priorities established by the humanitarian project, as noted in the Embassy`s statement. Additionally, it is said that the project makes an important contribution to ensuring the survival of many internally displaced persons and host families in communities that have accepted refugees, as well as conflict-affected people on both sides of the demarcation line in Donetsk and Luhansk regions.
Since the beginning of the war in Ukraine`s east, more than 650,000 people have received support within the framework of the FAO humanitarian projects, the press office reported.
According to UN Humanitarian Coordinator in Ukraine Neal Walker, the demand of the 2016 Humanitarian Response Plan for Ukraine is estimated at $298 million. The plan targets 3.1 million conflict-affected people in need of urgent humanitarian assistance.
