G7 warns Russia sanctions can be strengthened

The Great Seven (G7), that is the United States, UK, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, and Japan, are ready, if necessary, to boost Russia sanctions, according to a communique signed following a G7 summit in Italy`s Taormina.

”We also stand ready to take further restrictive measures in order to increase costs on Russia should its actions so require,” the communique reads

”We recall that the duration of sanctions is clearly linked to Russia`s complete implementation of its commitments in the Minsk Agreements and respect for Ukraine`s sovereignty. Sanctions can be rolled back when Russia meets its commitments,” the G7 leaders say.

Memo. In March, 2014, Russia annexed Crimea after the deployment of its troops to the peninsula. Moscow went on to destabilize the situation in Donbas. With the direct participation of Russian security forces and with the support of the Russian army, the so-called ”Donetsk People`s Republic” and ”Luhansk People`s Republic” were established. Russia has been supplying Donbas terrorists with weapons and sending in mercenaries and regular troops. Moscow`s actions led Western powers to introduce economic sanctions against the Russian Federation.
