Future wording of law on Donbas elections to force Russia to fulfill obligations – media

The draft law on elections in the temporarily occupied Donbas, which is being developed at the moment, will have guarantees laid down for Russia to comply with its obligations on security ahead of the elections, RBC-Ukraine reported, with reference to its informed sources in diplomatic circles.

In particular, it is expected that the procedure for the announcement of elections will be the same as for any elections in the country: the Verkhovna Rada should vote in favor of the corresponding resolution by appointing the election date.

It is proposed to enshrine in the transitional provisions of the law that the results of voting in the elections will only take effect if they are recognized by international observers, including the OSCE.

In addition, it is proposed to prescribe rules for voting of internally displaced persons. An obligatory condition shall be the participation of Ukrainian parties in the elections and coverage of the campaign and the voting process by Ukrainian media.

Earlier, Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko described the conditions for holding local elections in Donbas, including the implementation of the safety component of the Minsk agreements, and vote for the relevant law in the Verkhovna Rada.
