Cabinet struggles to control use of subsidies by heat generating companies

In 2015, Ukraine spent UAH 153 billion on the so-called energy subsidies, of which only UAH 25 billion were aimed at subsidizing the population, according to the Minister of Regional Development, Construction and Housing and Communal Services, Hennadiy Zubko after a government meeting Wednesday.
”We have spent UAH 153 billion on energy subsidies, and only UAH 25 billion of them are subsidies to households,” he said.
According to Zubko, the bulk of subsidies was directed to heat generating companies, and the use of subsidies by these companies is difficult to control.
At the same time, of UAH 25 billion, aimed at the needs of the population, only UAH 18 billion was used in 2015.
As UNIAN reported earlier, according to Prime Minister of Ukraine Volodymyr Groysman, half of the cost of gas produced in Ukraine will be sent to the state budget and used to fund subsidies.
According to the Minister of Finance Oleksandr Danylyuk, the amount of subsidies to the population for housing and communal services in 2016 will amount to UAH 40.2 billion.
Over the years of Ukraine`s independence, the country has spent $50 billion on compensation of difference between the market price of gas and the price of its actual sale to both the households and businesses.
