Brussels sees association with Ukraine unchanged

The European Union has said that it is not going to amend the Association Agreement with Ukraine.
European Commission spokesperson Pia Hansen said this at a briefing on Friday, Ukrinform’s correspondent in Brussels reported.
“As far as the European Union is concerned, we are not seeking any changes to the agreement. As for Ukraine, Ukraine is free and sovereign to make choices in accordance with its interests, in its own external relations,” – she said.
Hansen recalled that the EU-Ukraine Association Agreement was a bilateral agreement and only parties to these international agreements have to decide whether to make changes to the document in future.
As reported, Russian President Vladimir Putin demanded in a letter to European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso that the delay in the implementation of the trade part of the Association Agreement be used for the introduction of significant changes to the document.
However, The Wall Street Journal, citing an interview with Barroso, reported that the EU was not planning to amend the Association Agreement with Ukraine, but does not rule out that it can be done if Kyiv requests such changes. The newspaper said that changes could be made to the political and trade parts of the agreement.
