African swine fever outbreak recorded in Kharkiv region

After the outbreak of African swine fever (ASF) in Kharkiv region, the Kharkiv City Council`s State Emergency Anti-epizootic Commission has declared a quarantine in one of the areas.

The quarantine, to be in force until October 12, was declared in Osnovyanskyi district.

A sanitary zone was also introduced within a 3-km radius from the location of the epizootic outbreak, which includes part of Osnovyanskyi district.

In addition, the commission has identified a surveillance zone within a 20-km radius from the site of the epizootic outbreak, which includes all the territory of Kharkiv.

”In view of the situation that occurred, a ban has been imposed on export, import and transit of live animals and products of animal origin into the territory of the sanitary zone,” a report said.

”Ad hoc groups will also be set up to conduct rounds of households to identify diseased or dead pigs,” the report added.

Currently, quarantine police checkpoints have been installed at exit points from the village of Babai.

They are equipped with disinfectant barriers to prevent the import and export of products of animal origin from the territory.

According to Acting Head of Derzhprodspozhyvsluzhba in the city of Kharkiv Mykhailo Matviychuk, on September 1, four pigs were found dead in one of the households in the village of Babai, Kharkiv region. Following inspection, the DNA of African swine fever virus was identified.
