The 514th day of the Russia-Ukraine War: official operational information by the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine on 22.07.2023.

Russian troops’ attacks on the civilian infrastructure in Ukraine

During the day, Russian troops carried out another strike on Ukrainian territory using Shahed combat drones. Thanks to the successful efforts of the Air Force’s anti-aircraft defense systems, all five attack UAVs were destroyed. Additionally, the Russian army conducted 4 missile strikes and 36 aerial attacks, as well as 23 shelling incidents using multiple rocket launch systems, targeting Ukrainian military positions and civilian settlements. Unfortunately, there were casualties among the civilian population, and residential buildings and other civilian infrastructure were damaged.

The likelihood of further missile and aerial strikes across the entire territory of Ukraine remains high. The Russian army is focusing its main efforts on the directions of Kupiansk, Lyman, Bakhmut, Avdiivka, and Marinka, where heavy battles are ongoing. During the day, there were approximately 30 combat clashes.

  • In the Volyn and Polissia directions, the operational situation remains unchanged with no significant developments. There are no signs of Russia’s forming offensive groupings. Belarusian military units, in the designated areas along the border with Ukraine, are carrying out their tasks.
  • In the Siversk and Slobozhansk directions, the Russian army maintains a military presence. It conducted an aviation strike in the area of Veterynarne in Kharkiv Oblast. Additionally, it launched mortar and artillery shelling on more than 15 settlements, including Tymonovychi in Chernihiv Oblast; Seredyna-Buda, Uhroidy, Ryasne in Sumy Oblast; and Kozacha Lopan, Strilecha, Ternova, and Budarky in Kharkiv Oblast.
  • In the Kupiansk direction, Ukrainian soldiers are holding their defense steadfastly. The Russian army subjected Kamianka, Novomlynsk, Dvorichna, Zapadne, Kupiansk, and Kyslivka in Kharkiv Oblast to artillery and mortar shelling.
  • In the Lyman direction, Russian attempts at advancement in the areas of Nadiia in Luhansk Oblast and Torske, Hryhorivka in Donetsk Oblast were unsuccessful. Russian troops carried out aviation strikes in the regions of Serebrianskyy Lis and Spirne in Donetsk Oblast. Artillery shelling affected settlements such as Nevske, Bilohorivka in Luhansk Oblast, and Torske, Verkhniokamianske, Spirne, and Rozdolivka in Donetsk Oblast.
  • In the Bakhmut direction, Ukrainian troops successfully repelled Russian attacks in the areas of Bohdanivka and Ivanivske in Donetsk Oblast, under intense artillery fire. Over 10 settlements were affected by hostile artillery shelling, including Vasiukivka, Markove, Bohdanivka, Ivanivske, Stupochky, Kostiantynivka, Druzhba, and New York in Donetsk Oblast.
  • In the Avdiivka direction, Ukrainian military effectively repelled Russian troops’ attacks in the Avdiivka area, despite heavy Russian fire from aviation and artillery. The Russian army also launched an aviation strike in the Severne area in Donetsk Oblast region and carried out artillery shelling on more than 10 settlements, including Avdiivka, Pervomaiske, and Nevelske.
  • In the Marinka direction, the Armed Forces of Ukraine continue to restrain the advance of Russian troops in the areas of Krasnohorivka and Marinka, Donetsk Oblast. In the Krasnohorivka area, the Russian army launched an aviation strike and conducted shelling on more than 10 settlements, including Krasnohorivka, Maksymilianivka, Georgiivka, Marinka, and Pobeda in Donetsk Oblast.
  • In the Shakhtarsk direction, Russian attempts at advancement in the area of Novomykhailivka, Donetsk Oblast, were unsuccessful. Russian soldiers also carried out an aviation strike near Blahodatne in Donetsk Oblast and conducted shelling on more than 10 settlements, including Paraskoviivka, Novomykhailivka, Vuhledar, and Blahodatne in Donetsk Oblast.
  • In the Zaporizhzhia and Kherson directions, the Russian army is concentrating its main efforts on preventing further advancement of Ukrainian troops. It made unsuccessful attempts to regain lost positions in the area south of Novodarivka, Zaporizhzhia Oblast. Russian troops also carried out aviation strikes in the regions of Huliaipilske, Mala Tokmachka, Novodanilivka, and Piatyhatky, Zaporizhzhia Oblast. Artillery shelling affected more than 25 settlements, including Novodarivka, Huliaipole, Huliaipilske, Novoandrivka, Stepove, and Kamianske in Zaporizhzhia Oblast; Nikopol in Dnipropetrovsk Oblast; Zolota Balka, Dudchany, Beryslav, Antonivka, Bilozirka, Veletenske in Kherson Oblast, as well as the city of Kherson.

Meanwhile, the Ukrainian Armed Forces continue their offensive operations in the Melitopol and Berdiansk directions, holding their achieved positions, delivering artillery strikes on identified Russian targets, and conducting counter-battery measures.

In units of Russian troops stationed in temporarily occupied Horlivka, Donetsk Oblast, the presence of citizens from Uzbekistan has been noted. These individuals arrived in the city of Mariupol for construction work. However, upon their arrival, their passports were confiscated, and they were conscripted into the ranks of Russian military as volunteers.

The Ukrainian troops’ strikes on Russian equipment

The aviation of the Ukrainian army conducted 8 strikes during the day on areas where Russian personnel, weapons, and military equipment were concentrated. Ukrainian troops also destroyed 4 reconnaissance UAVs of the operational-tactical level.

The missile and artillery units targeted 7 Russian artillery systems at their firing positions throughout the day.
