The United States supports the policy of accession to NATO by countries that want to join collaborative efforts in ensuring Euro-Atlantic security.
U.S. Department of State deputy spokesperson Marie Harf said this on Tuesday, while commenting on the adoption by the Verkhovna Rada of the decision on Ukraine’s non-bloc status, an Ukrinform correspondent reports.
“We fully support the open-door policy [by the North Atlantic Treaty Organization],” Harf said.
She noted that NATO policy remained consistent and that “countries that are willing to contribute to security in the Euro-Atlantic space are welcome to apply for membership.”
Harf said that each application would be considered and that any decision regarding potential membership of NATO, including in relation to Ukraine, would be taken by the alliance’s member states.
