Sending UN peacekeepers to the east of Ukraine can freeze the conflict in Donbas, and its settlement can be expected over the years, member of the German Bundestag and CDU/CSU foreign policy spokesman Philip Missfelder said, according to the DW.
“If there is a military buffer zone, it can lead to a situation such as in the north of Cyprus. The UN for 40 years has been there to provide security and stability between Turkey and Cyprus, but the conflict has not been resolved. Thus the conflict is frozen,” Missfelder said.
At the same time, he noted that for Ukraine Germany wants to try to find solutions to the conflict as a whole – “without conservation of the east”.
