Ukrainian army Counteroffensive in the east: liberating Kharkiv region

The Armed Forces of Ukraine began to recapture the occupied Ukrainian territories in the Kharkiv region (east of Ukraine) on September 6, 2022. The Ukrainian military is confidently moving forward in the Kharkiv direction, liberating the occupied territories and pushing Russian invaders to the border with the Russian Federation. The Russian army is horrified by the counteroffensive of Ukrainian troops.

Ukrainian troops launched an offensive in the Kharkiv region, after concentrating their forces north of Balakliia on  September 6, 2022. This drove Russian forces to the left bank of Serednya Balakliika and Severskyi Donets rivers. The same day, Ukrainian forces captured Verbivka located less than 3 kilometers northwest of Balaklia. Russian sources clarified that Russian forces destroyed unspecified bridges in the eastern outskirts of Balaklia. This was to stop further Ukrainian advances. But, Ukrainian troops went on the offensive in the directions of Balaklia and Volokhiv Yar, Shevchenkove, Kupyansk, and east of Balaklia in the districts of Savyntsi and Kunye.

The next day, Ukrainian forces advanced approximately 20 km (12 mi.) into Russian-occupied territory. They reclaimed approximately 400 km (150 sq.mi.) from September 6 to September 7. According to reports, Ukrainian forces reached positions in northeastern Izium. Russian sources claim that this success was due to the relocation of Russian forces to Kherson in response to the Ukrainian offensive. In addition, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy first hinted at the successes of the Armed Forces in the Kharkiv direction on September 7.

“Ukrainian forces likely used tactical surprise to advance at least 20 km into Russian-controlled territory in the eastern Kharkiv region on September 7, recapturing approximately 400 square kilometers of territory,” analysts said.

On September 8, Ukrainian troops advanced 50 km (31 miles) into the Russian defense positions north of Izium. Despite Russian National Guard units losing control of Balakliia (44 km northwest of Izium), Ukraine didn’t take control of the city until September 10. 

Ukrainian forces also regained control over more than 20 settlements on September 8, 2022. The Ukrainian flag was raised on the main square of Balaklia, Izyum district, Kharkiv region, which was under Russian occupation for half a year. Ukrainian military entered the city. Ukrainian defenders publish photos and videos on the evening of September 8. 

Ukrainian Armed Forces continue to advance in the Kharkiv region on September 9: Russian occupiers are fleeing.

“Personnel of the occupying forces in civilian clothes resort to desertion and try to return to the territory of the Russian Federation. So, during the day, more than 15 such cases were noted,” the General Staff of Ukraine reports.

Ukrainian defenders liberated Volokhiv Yar in the Kharkiv region from Russian occupiers on September 9. In addition, police of the Kharkiv region resumes activities in the de-occupied part of the region from September 9. The police urged residents who have suffered from Russian crimes or witnessed them to contact them. The President of Ukraine reported that more than 30 settlements were liberated in the Kharkiv region on September 9, 2022.

Kupyansk, Izium were taken by Ukrainian forces on September 10. Ukrainian forces were reported to be moving towards Lyman. Police and security officers from Ukraine moved into the recaptured settlements to verify the identities of those who had remained under Russian occupation.

In addition, the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine and the Ground Forces published a video of the raising of the Ukrainian flag in Balaklia. This city was officially liberated from Russian troops on September 10.

Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated that about 2,000 square kilometers of the territory of Ukraine were liberated from occupiers.

The General Staff of Ukraine reported on the morning of September 11 that the liberation of settlements in the Kupyansk and Izyum districts of the Kharkiv region continues.

The General Staff of the Armed Forces also reported that occupiers suffered losses of approximately 400 people during September 10-11. The largest number of Russian soldiers died in the Kharkiv and Donetsk directions. In general, on September 11, the estimated losses of the Russian army during the full-scale invasion of Ukraine were 52,650 people.
