Ukrainian authorities are negotiating with international donors about getting at least $15 billion in a short time, in order to stabilize the national currency and balance the state budget.
Deputy Foreign Minister of Ukraine Vadym Prystaiko said this at the end of his visit to the U.S. in Washington on Friday, an Ukrinform correspondent reported.
“The IMF, the World Bank, the individual partners, including the United States are now ready to prepare a financial aid package that will help Ukraine to survive in this difficult time, to stabilize the currency and to balance its budget. The amount sum we are talking about is large, and it is about $15 billion. We believe that this is that particular amount we need right now,” he said.
He noted that Ukraine’s chances to receive such assistance “depend on how much each partner can allocate.” Herewith, he said, it is assumed that the bulk of the funding will be provided by the IMF, which should take the decision soon. Apart from financial institutions, the assistance is also expected from the U.S., the EU members and the European Union itself.
With regard to timing of lending, he said that “Ukraine would like to get the first tranches in the next two months, but in general we are talking about the fact that Ukraine needs such funding this year.”
