Ukraine ready to send investigator to Russia to question Yanukovych

The Prosecutor General`s Office of Ukraine (PGO) is preparing a motion to question fugitive ex-president of Ukraine Viktor Yanukovych in Russia as a suspect, according to the Dzerkalo Tyzhnia online news portal, dt.ua.

A respective request for international legal assistance is to be sent to Russia`s investigation agencies next week, head of the PGO`s special investigation department Serhiy Horbatiuk said, dt.ua reported.

”We`re preparing a request for questioning Yanukovych as a suspect. We`re asking for allowing our investigator to participate in the interrogation in person. We`re also informing that we`re ready for a video conference via skype,” he said.

According to Horbatiuk, the investigators plan to interview Yanukovych in such criminal cases as the creation of a criminal gang and dispersal of protest rallies during the Euromaidan events in Kyiv, aggravated by serious crimes.

He also said that Ukraine had repeatedly sent requests to Russia for Yanukovych`s extradition. But the Russian investigators` response was that they considered Yanukovych`s case in Ukraine as ”politically motivated.”

”Thus, if he has not been extradited, the interrogation in Russia could be useful,” Horbatiuk said.
