Ukraine must receive the status of a candidate for EU membership and this is quite justified. The country has done a great job in eight years, and the decision of the European Commission is historic.

Von der Leyen said that the decision of the European Commission to grant Ukraine candidate status is based on data, facts and preparatory work that the country has done in eight years.
“I believe that we will get a positive decision (from the European Council), we will receive support, and the course has already been set. Of course, this is a historic decision that must also be made by the European Council, but preparations are going well. Ukraine has made great strides, “she said.
The EU leader noted that “Ukraine is a strong parliamentary democracy.”
Von der Leyen clarified that the EU “wants to see even more reforms.” However, the head of the EU noted that it depends on the applicant country, whether the accession to the community will be successful and how soon it will happen.
“In these countries, everything depends on how fast this process goes, and they have to carry out the necessary reforms, they have to prove that they are in line with the European Union.”
