“Donetsk and Luhansk regions are the hottest spots. It should be distinguished that in the Luhansk region the main city is Lysychansk, where the enemy is advancing, and in the Donetsk region currently 45% [of the territory – ed.] has remained and will remain under [Ukrainian] control – we are sure that we will stop the enemy and in the future liberate our occupied territories.”
This is almost half of the region, despite the fact that a third was occupied for eight years prior to the full-scale invasion.
“The shelling in the Donetsk region is so devastating and so frequent, because of the large area and front line. All the populated areas of the region are being shelled. Constantly.”
When asked about the situation in the Ukrainian-controlled areas of Donetsk, Kyrylenko called it “very difficult.”
“Those who do not leave Donetsk are usually staying in shelters along the front line. People receive humanitarian aid and food. But it is also extremely dangerous. Because the enemy uses extremely heavy artillery, aircraft. The enemy uses all kinds of weapons on the front line.”
