The European Union is on the verge of a “historic decision” on the eve of the summit on June 23-24, during which granting Ukraine the status of a candidate for EU membership will be considered.

“I hope that in 20 years, looking back, we will be able to say, ‘We did the right thing,’ ” Leyen said.
According to von der Leyen, the main challenge for the EU will be to develop a common position based on the results of the summit, “which will reflect the scale of this historic decision.”
Ursula von der Leyen noted that Ukraine has achieved a lot in recent years. However, much needs to be done.
“Our recommendation will reflect this,” added von der Leyen.
The European Commission is expected to release its opinion next Friday, on June 17, a week before the EU summit. The condition for a positive decision should be Kyiv’s commitment to carry out certain reforms – in particular, in the field of the state of law and the fight against corruption.
