Poland`s counterintelligence detained an officer on suspicion of spying for the Russian Federation, according to tvn24.pl.
The suspect is a senior lieutenant, Pyotr C. who has been on the wanted list since August this year. He is suspected of transferring classified information to the Russian intelligence, tvn24.pl reports.
”In the morning of December 6, 2016, a senior lieutenant in the reserve, Pyotr C, was detained. He has been wanted since August 2016. District Military Prosecutor`s Office in Warsaw has charged him under with committing a crime under Article 130, paragraph 3 [cooperation with foreign intelligence],” reads a statement.
Polish media reported that the officer had earlier served at the 1st transport aircraft base in Warsaw and had access to the secret codes of access to the military base. In 2015, he was transferred to the personnel reserve.
The officer now faces up to 10 years in prison.
