The District Court of the Hague ruled that the passenger flight MH17, which was flying from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur in Malaysia on July 17, 2014, was shot down by “Buk” missile complex on the territory of eastern Ukraine controlled by Russia. 298 people on board were killed as a result of the plane crash.

The court accepted the prosecution’s version that it was the Russian Federation that controlled the so-called “Donetsk People’s Republic” (DNR) in eastern Ukraine. In addition, the judges, determined on the basis of confirmed evidence, that the plane MH17 was shot down by the “Buk” air defense system from the temporarily occupied Pervomaiske, and that the missile was fired intentionally after the decision was made.
“MH17 was shot down as a result of the launch of a “Buk” missile complex from a field near Pervomaiske, the target of which was the passenger flight MH17,” said the judge of the Hague Court Hendrik Steinhaus.
After the MH17 plane crash, this complex was “quickly taken to the Russian Federation, hoping that it would prevent an international scandal.”
The court found Russian military officers, who headed the command, intelligence and the Ministry of Defense of the so-called “DPR” Igor Girkin, Sergey Dubinsky, as well as a citizen of Ukraine Leonid Kharchenko guilty of the plane tragedy. They were sentenced to life imprisonment and have to pay 16 million euros in compensation to the relatives of the victims.
