European Union is ready to supply electricity to Ukraine, – EU Commissioner for Energy

The European Commissioner for Energy Kadri Simson arrived in Ukraine’s capital Kyiv on November 1, 2022. She stated that it was necessary to increase support for the Ukrainian energy sector after the Russian missile strikes, as well as Europe had all the necessary prerequisites for the supply of electricity to Ukraine.

“I am in Kyiv today to help scale up support to the Ukraine’s energy sector. Ukrainian energy infrastructure is under targeted attack by Russia – a cruel & inhumane tactic to cause human suffering as the winter is approaching. The EU stands by Ukraine to help them until they prevail,” Kadri Simson wrote on Twitter.

Earlier, the EU Commissioner for Energy stated in an interview with the Ukrainian publication “Unian” that the countries of the European Union were ready to supply Ukraine with electricity in the event of its shortage due to missile attacks by the Russians, and work was currently underway to increase capacity limits.

“We have the necessary prerequisites for the EU to supply electricity to Ukraine. The first step was taken back in March when we synchronized the Ukrainian energy grid with the network of continental Europe in two weeks, which many doubted,” said Kadri Simson.

According to the EU Commissioner for Energy, electricity can be transmitted in both directions. This means that Ukraine can both export and import electricity from the EU.

“Obvious countries that could sell electricity to Ukraine are, of course, its closest neighbors. The volumes they can provide are limited by the trading capacity agreed upon within the framework of the European Energy Network ENTSO-E. We continue to work very closely with them to increase this limit,” the European Commissioner for Energy explained.
