EU sectoral economic sanctions against Russia will hurt the German economy.
German Vice Chancellor Sigmar Gabriel announced this in a television interview, Interfax reported.
However, he said that the introduction of sanctions was necessary so that Europe would not face substantial consequences in future: “There would be much, much greater negative consequences if Europe did not act.”
“Where war and peace are at stake, economic policies can’t be the main concern… If all the lessons learned in Europe are that someone can start a civil war in a neighboring country and nothing happens, then that would cost a lot more than a few percentage points of possible [economic] growth,” Gabriel said.
