On January 11, 2017, Japanese Ambassador to Kyiv Shigeki Sumi held a meeting with Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko. A decree on celebrating the Year of Japan in Ukraine was signed and the President of Ukraine expressed his gratitude to Japan in support the independence and territorial integrity of Ukraine, according to the presidential press service.
Shigeki Sumi appreciated the high recognition of the role of Japan:
“It is extremely important. Relations between Japan and Ukraine have never been as close as it is today,” Shigeki Sumi said.

Japanese Ambassador said that after Euromaidan large Japanese companies began economic activities in Ukraine
“If large companies have begun investing in Ukraine, it means that other companies will invest in your country,” stated Japanese diplomat.
“The celebration of the Year of Japan is not only important for politicians or businessmen, but also for ordinary people who feel and understand the importance of cooperation between the two countries,” underlined Japanese Ambassador to Kyiv Shigeki Sumi.
