The European Union actively supports all efforts of the international community aimed at ending Russia’s aggressive war against Ukraine, but any peace agreements or cease-fire are possible only when Ukraine itself agrees with them.

“I can confirm that the EU is not directly involved in mediation (between Russia and Ukraine – ed.). With all the means we have, the EU, together with its partners, supports all efforts that may ultimately lead to Ukraine and Russia agreeing to a cessation of hostilities. First of all, this is a question of Russia. It is Russia that continues its criminal, illegal and unprovoked aggression against Ukraine. Russia violates the UN Charter, international law and its own international obligations. This criminal aggression must be stopped,” the spokesman emphasized.
He reminded that some countries, for example, Turkey, have repeatedly offered such mediation in the settlement of the conflict, but Russia has not shown great interest in these efforts and the desire to join direct negotiations with Ukraine. The EU supports such efforts. But concerning the mediation of the EU – the Russian Federation does not accept this possibility, it remains very hostile to the European Union, which is evidenced, in particular, by the recent decision to add a significant number of EU member states to the list of “unfriendly” countries.
“Whatever the outcome of negotiations between Russia and Ukraine on the cessation of hostilities, it must be agreed, first of all, by Ukraine. We support Ukraine 100 percent, and we will continue to support Ukraine in this,” Stano added.
