Lado Apkhazava, a teacher, laureate of the National Prize Educators and finalist of the Global Teacher Award at the Teachers’ Award in March 2022, said on his Facebook that he sold a commemorative coin from an international competition and a wedding ring of his mother to help Ukrainian students and teachers. He managed to collect 2.5 thousand GEL (about 25 thousand hryvnias).

“My mother would be happy. Sorry, but I have nothing more. Glory to Ukraine!”

From that moment, his personal initiative turned into a fundraising campaign, which was joined by teachers from all over the world. The status of the Apkhazava was translated into English and shared in 39 countries. $ 700,000 has been raised so far.

“Teachers from 39 countries have started raising funds to help Ukraine. The last time we checked the account, $ 700,000 was raised.”

In addition, the new owner of the wedding ring and the Global Teacher Award coin returned them to Apkhazava as soon as the teacher transferred the money to a Polish organization that provides for Ukrainian refugees.
