Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko has said he hopes that on Friday, September 5, the Trilateral Contact Group will begin negotiations on the peaceful settlement of the situation in Donetsk and Luhansk regions and real steps will be taken to achieve peace.
The head of state said this on Wednesday at a meeting with Ukrainians released from Libyan captivity, the presidential press service reported.
“I have high hopes that a peace process will finally be initiated in Minsk on Friday,” Poroshenko said.
He said that Ukraine had not given any reason to provoke aggression against itself.
“The whole world knows that Ukraine is a country which strictly complies with obligations and the international law and is currently subject to aggression of the neighboring country,” Poroshenko said, expressing hope that it would finally be possible to stop constant violation of agreements, execution of captives and civilians, destruction of educational facilities and other infrastructure.
He said that achieving peace was currently a priority task.
“The first task is peace. Today, at 05.00, due to the difference in time, we discussed with President Putin the ways to stop these terrible processes. One cannot deny that it is necessary to stop the deaths of people,” he said.
Poroshenko said that all Ukrainians wanted peace, thus, he would struggle for it. “The people of Ukraine are 100% for peace. Politicos want to play war. I would like to say that I will not let them do it. We must jointly struggle for peace,” he said.
