National Bank of Ukraine to initiate sanctions against Sberbank subsidiary in Ukraine for servicing holders of separatist ”passports” of ”DPR-LPR”

The National Bank of Ukraine has told UNIAN that, if Sberbank of Russia accepts ”passports” of the unrecognized ”DPR” and ”LPR”, the issue of introducing sanctions against the bank`s subsidiary in Ukraine will be submitted to the National Security and Defense Council.

”If this information is confirmed, the NBU will initiate a request to the NSDC on introducing sanctions against Sberbank of Russia`s subsidiary in Ukraine – PJSC Sberbank,” the NBU press service has told UNIAN.

The regulator recalled that, according to Article 5 of the Law ”On Sanctions”, the decision to impose sanctions on individual legal entities shall be adopted by the National Security and Defense Council and further enforced by a presidential decree.

”PJSC Sberbank (a Ukrainian subsidiary of Russia`s Sberbank), like other legal entities operating in Ukraine, shall be guided by Ukrainian legislation, which does not recognize ”passports” of the so-called ”DPR” and ”LPR,” the regulator`s press service said.

The central bank also reminded that today, the banks of Ukraine are forbidden to provide any types of financial transactions in the territories that are not controlled by the Ukrainian authorities, as stipulated by NBU Resolution No. 466 of August 6, 2014 ”On Suspending Financial Transactions.”

Earlier the Russian media reported that Russia`s Sberbank at its branches in the territory of the Russian Federation began servicing holders of ”passports” of the so-called DPR and LPR, in line with a corresponding decree by the Russian president on recognizing these pseudo-IDs.

A comment issued by Sberbank`s subsidiary in Ukraine says: ”The Ukrainian subsidiary bank operates within the legal framework of the country, and does not accept ”passports” of the ”DPR” and ”LPR,” the spokesman for the bank told UNIAN.
