Ukraine refuses to pay compensation for Belavia plane`s return – media

UkSATSE, the Ukrainian air traffic controller, is not holding negotiations with Belarusian air carrier Belavia on any compensation for the return of their passenger jet, which was heading to Minsk, back to Kyiv, that`s according to Belavia`s response to the request of the Ukrainian media, Belarus Partisan outlet reports.

The report says the Ukrainians explain the refusal with the fact that UkSATSE was not the one to blame for the incident.

It is worth noting that a week ago, Belavia management said the parties were negotiating the amount of compensation for the returned Belarusian plane.

As UNIAN reported earlier, on October 21 the Security Service of Ukraine made a passenger plane owned by Belavia airlines, which had taken off from Kyiv (Zhuliany) airport heading to Minsk, to return to Kyiv midflight.

The cause of the SBU move was the presence on board the aircraft of an Armenian citizen Artur Martirosyan, the supporter of the so-called Anti-Maidan. The man was removed from the aircraft and searched. The plane flew to Minsk after refueling, while Mr Martirosyan was released a few hours later and he flew to Minsk on another flight.

Belarus officially demanded from Ukraine an apology and a monetary compensation.

November 24, Belavia`s Deputy General Director for Marketing and Foreign Economic Affairs Igor Cherginets said that the issue of compensation for the return of the aircraft was being worked out.

”In addition to our company, the Belarusian Foreign Ministry is also engaged thoroughly in dealing with the issue. All the necessary conditions have been fulfilled on the part of Belavia, and the amount of compensation for the return of the aircraft has been agreed upon,” said a company representative.

According to him, consultations with UkSATSE were continuing in this regard.
