Poroshenko sure Trump won`t change U.S. policy on Ukraine – Reuters

Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko said on Thursday he did not expect the election of Donald Trump to the White House to bring any great change in U.S. support for his country, according to Reuters.

Saying Kyiv had enjoyed support from both parties in Washington in its confrontation with Russia, Poroshenko told a news conference after a summit with EU leaders in Brussels:

”We don`t expect any significant changes in this bipartisan support,” Reuters quoted the Ukrainian president as saying.

He had spoken to Trump in recent days, he noted.

As UNIAN reported earlier, Poroshenko had a telephone conversation with President-elect of the United States, Donald Trump, on November 15.

The Ukrainian president congratulated the U.S. president-elect on the election win and emphasized readiness to work with Trump`s administration and to further strengthen the Ukraine-U.S. strategic partnership, Poroshenko`s press service said.

Poroshenko also stressed the need for Washington`s resolute support of Ukraine in countering Russian aggression and implementing crucial reforms.

The parties agreed to maintain contacts, including through holding a bilateral meeting.

Poroshenko invited Trump to pay a visit to Ukraine at earliest convenience.
