The Council of Europe`s Committee on Legal Affairs and Human Rights has started work on a report on the 2010 plane crash in Smolensk which killed 96, including Polish President Lech Kaczynski, according to Radio Poland.
Dutch MP Pieter Omtzigt was appointed author of the report on Tuesday, Radio Poland reported.
Omtzigt was earlier part of a team investigating the crash of a Malaysia Airlines plane which was shot down over Ukraine in July 2014.
”The most important element will be Pieter Omtzigt`s visit to Poland and Russia. I hope […] the report will force Russia to at least return the wreckage to Poland,” Polish MP Dominik Tarczynski, a member of the Legal Affairs Committee, told TVP Info.
After the report is prepared, the Council of Europe may pass a resolution on the issue.
The crash in western Russia in 2010 killed Polish President Lech Kaczynski, his wife Maria and 94 others, including high-ranking Polish political and military leaders.
Russia has so far refused to return the wreckage of the Tu-154M plane to Poland.
