Ukraine should regain influence on the world food market, because the agricultural sector is currently the only industry in the economy showing growth.
Ukrainian Prime Minister Arseniy Yatseniuk said this at a roundtable meeting entitled “The key aspects of a government package of comprehensive changes in the tax system” in Cherkasy region on Tuesday, according to the governmental press service.
“Agriculture is currently the only industry showing growth. I insisted and insist that we have two points of growth in the Ukrainian economy. The first is agriculture, and the second is energy. Our goal is to do everything to ensure that Ukraine regains influence on the global food market,” Yatseniuk said.
He said that there were all possibilities to fulfill this task: “Someone has oil, someone has gas. We have the land and the ability to feed Ukraine and feed a significant number of countries that should pay Ukraine with currency, because we sell agricultural products.”
In this regard, Yatseniuk said that at this stage Ukraine had launched the process of tax reform, which is to ensure the further development of the industry, and added that a government strategy offers a reduction in the number of taxes to nine, but the debate on reform of the tax system in agriculture was still ongoing.
“Our foreign creditors suggest that we move to a common system of taxation on agriculture. We realize that we can switch to it if we then use subsidies that are envisaged in the European Union, because it will be difficult to compete,” Yatseniuk said.
