IAEA inspection of Zaporizhia NPP power unit No. 3 successful

Inspectors of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) have successfully conducted a regular scheduled inspection of power unit No. 3 at Zaporizhia nuclear power plant (NPP), according to the press service of state company Energoatom.

”From June 4 to June 7, 2016 IAEA inspectors carried out a regular scheduled inspection of power unit No. 3 at Zaporizhia NPP … According to Serhiy Klimov, the nuclear safety department head, the inspection has been carried out successfully, without any problems,” a statement reads.

It is reported that the inspection was held in the framework of the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons signed between Ukraine and the IAEA.

Earlier, on April 18, Zaporizhia nuclear power plant disconnected power unit No. 3 from the country`s power grid to carry out planned overhaul. Repairs of the power unit have lasted for 53 days. The IAEA inspectors from May 31 to June 1 conducted a regular scheduled inspection of power units No. 1 And No. 2 at Rivne NPP.

Memo. Energoatom is Ukraine`s largest electricity producer, accounting for about 50% of the country`s overall power output. Energoatom is responsible for the safe operation of all nuclear power plants in the country.

Ukraine ranks seventh in the world in terms of the installed capacity of its nuclear power generating units. Energoatom operates four nuclear power plants in Ukraine with 15 power generating units, all with VVER-type reactors. Zaporizhia nuclear power plant, operating six power units with a total capacity of 6 GW, is Europe`s largest.
