A Russian convoy of 280 trucks, which are moving in the direction of Ukraine to deliver a “humanitarian aid” to residents of the country’s eastern regions, may be an attempt by Moscow to establish a permanent presence on the Ukrainian territory, French Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius told the France Info radio station.
“We have to be extremely watchful, because the Russians can use it as a cover to stay nearby Luhansk and Donetsk and confront us with a fait accompli, which has already taken place,” Fabius said.
The head of French diplomacy noted that the delivery of the humanitarian assistance should be carried out only under the auspices of the Red Cross.
As Russian media reported, 280 trucks of the Russian Ministry of Emergency Affairs left Moscow region and are moving in the direction of Ukraine. The aim is delivery of the humanitarian aid to residents of eastern Ukraine.
On Monday, deputy head of the Presidential Administration of Ukraine Valeriy Chaly said that Russia may join the humanitarian aid to the east of Ukraine, but this must be done in accordance with international standards, Ukrainian legislation, through controlled by Ukraine border crossings under the auspices of the International Committee of the Red Cross.
The United States, the European Union and NATO have already warned Russia against military action against Ukraine under the “humanitarian” cover.
