Naftogaz may stop providing gas transit services to Gazprom

Ukraine’s national oil and gas company Naftogaz may stop providing services to Russia’s Gazprom on gas transit through Ukraine to Europe, Naftogaz’s press service has told RBC-Ukraine.
“National Joint-Stock Company Naftogaz of Ukraine admits that if sanctions are imposed on Russian gas monopoly Gazprom, the NJSC will end cooperation with it, including in the provision of services on gas transit through Ukraine to Europe,” the company said.
The company’s press service specified that if sanctions are introduced against Gazprom, the company would not be able to work with the Russian monopoly. “Then European companies will have to sign contracts for gas purchase on the Ukrainian-Russian border with Gazprom, as well as with the operator of the Ukrainian gas transport system, for the transit of this gas.”
However, the company said that the adoption of a draft law on sanctions, which was submitted to parliament by the Cabinet of Ministers on August 8, would not mean the automatic introduction of special economic and restrictive measures referred to in the document.
The law creates legal framework for the imposition of restrictions on certain types of economic activities, including in the provision of resource transportation services. Such restrictions could be imposed by the National Security and Defense Council under a motion from the Verkhovna Rada, the president, the Cabinet of Ministers, the National Bank or the Security Service.
As reported, Prime Minister Arseniy Yatseniuk predicts that the Verkhovna Rada would consider sanctions against Russia on August 12.
