Germany suspends military exports to Russia

Because of the conflict in Ukraine, the German government finally stopped the military exports to Russia, revoking the permission for the implementation of agreements between the German company Rheinmetall and the Russian Defence Ministry on the construction of a combat training center for Russian soldiers in the village of Mulino.
The German newspaper Sueddeutsche reported citing the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy.
“The Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy has revoked the permission issued by the previous government for the construction by the Rheinmetall concern of a combat training center in Mulino, Russia,” the newspaper writes.
The facility with a total area of 500 sq. km, according to Rheinmetall, was to become the “world’s most modern training ground” for the preparation of up to 30,000 military annually. The construction was planned to be completed by the end of this year. The contract value was estimated at 100 million euros.
As the newspaper recalls, given the Ukrainian crisis in March the implementation of the agreement was temporarily suspended. Now the Federal government finally decided to stop the project. Thus, Germany went to even greater lengths: the EU’s last week embargo on supplying Russia with arms, which does not apply to export contracts concluded earlier. For example, France still intends to give Russia two Mistral warships.
The publication draws attention to the fact that Rheinmetall has the right to appeal the decision of the German government in court or to demand compensation.
