Poroshenko calls government, MPs for unity: Don’t open second front

The laws that the government urges MPs to pass are unpopular, but they are very necessary to the state. Therefore, the Verkhovna Rada should consolidate for their adoption, because the internal squabbles would benefit only the enemies of Ukraine.
President Petro Poroshenko said this in his address to the Verkhovna Rada on Thursday.
“Today, the parliament’s decisions are needed not only to finance the army, although it is the No.1 issue. The parliament’s decisions are needed in order to ensure that the country’s economy works, that people could feel themselves safe and protected. I insist the work of the Verkhovna Rada should not be paralyzed. We need consolidation, rather than confrontation,” he said.
According to Poroshenko, over the past three days, he had a lot of meetings with the leaders of factions and groups, representatives of independent MPs, leadership of the Cabinet of Ministers. The President turned to them with a clear requirement: under conditions of external aggression, we must be united, because the internal squabbles will surely be used by the enemy.
“I told the people’s deputies: You have the right to choose to vote “against” or “in favor” the President or the government. But you always have to vote “in favor of” Ukraine,” he said.
Emotions should not take precedence over mind, he said, and urged politicians to speak the language of compromise, not ultimatums.
“Doing otherwise means opening a second front against Ukraine,” the head of state emphasized.
