Social activists have secured the opening of a criminal case against Party of Regions faction leader Oleksandr Yefremov. Now he faces up to six years in prison for embezzling UAH 100 million in state budget funds, the Center for Combating Corruption has reported.
“Ukraine’s Prosecutor General’s Office has launched criminal proceedings against the head of the Party of Regions faction in the Verkhovna Rada, Oleksandr Yefremov. He is charged with abuse of power and illegal pressure on officials to obtain material gain. According to Part 2, Article 364 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine, he faces from three to six years in prison,” reads the statement.
According to the report published by the Prosecutor General’s Office, Yefremov is accused, while being a people’s deputy, of exerting pressure on workers of the state-owned Luhanskvuhillia enterprise, obliging them to purchase equipment from two firms. The first one, DS-8 Ltd, is owned by his son, and the second one, Indexprom Ltd, is owned by his wife.
Winning the tenders, these firms supplied the equipment at price three times higher than the market price, for a total of UAH 232.38 million, thus embezzling the state budget for more than UAH 100 million.
