A draft resolution entitled “Ukraine Security Assistance Act of 2014” has been submitted to the House of Representatives of the U.S. Congress, the press service of the U.S.-Ukraine Business Council has reported.
The authors of the document are co-chairs of the Ukrainian group in the lower house of the Congress, Jim Gerlach, Sander Levin and Marcy Kaptur, Deutsche Welle reported.
Kaptur said that it was time for the United States “to provide reasonable security assistance to Ukraine.” The bill grants Kyiv the status of NATO ally without accession to the alliance. “Our bill calls to designate Ukraine as a Major Non-NATO Ally, in order to temporarily provide vital resources and the security NATO offers to member states,” Marcy added.
Gerlach, in turn, said that Russia does not respect the sovereignty of Ukraine and continues to encroach on its territory. “The evidence released by U.S. and Ukrainian intelligence authorities shows without a doubt that rebel separatists and hired thugs, armed with superior Russian technology and weapons, continue to foment havoc and instability,” he said.
