“Had a call with the President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen. We discussed macro-financial assistance to Ukraine for the current and next years. We also stressed the importance of continuing the grain initiative for world food security. Touched upon the issue of strengthening sanctions and opposing the actions of Iran, which supports aggression against our country,” Volodymyr Zelenskyy said at the end of the conversation.
At the same time, Ursula von der Leyen confirmed that the European Union was determined to provide long-term support to Ukraine, and announced a new package of financial support to Ukraine for 2023 in the amount of up to 18 billion euros.
“President von der Leyen informed President Zelenskyy that she would this week propose a substantial financial package from the EU of up to EUR 1.5 billion a month, totalling up to EUR 18 billion, which would contribute significantly to cover Ukraine’s financing needs for 2023,” says the European Commission.
In the conversation, Volodymyr Zelenskyy and von der Leyen emphasized the importance of providing predictable and regular funding for the state to perform its main functions. The head of the European Commission expects that it will be possible to increase the aid at the expense of allies who will join in the formation of the package.
The EU also continues to work on providing Ukraine with immediate humanitarian support in the winter period.
