Steinmeier initially wanted to meet with Volodymyr Zelenskyy in Kyiv on October 20, 2022. However, he postponed the trip because the German Foreign Office and the Office of Internal Affairs, as well as the Federal Police and other authorities, had concerns about the President’s security.

Steinmeier’s spokesperson Cerstin Gammelin noted on Twitter that the President had arrived in Ukraine with a double message.

“My message to the people of Ukraine is: You can count on Germany! We will continue to support Ukraine: militarily, politically, financially and in humanitarian regards. Then we know that they need our full solidarity and support – as long as it is necessary,” Cerstin Gammelin quoted the German President.

Presidents will discuss the restoration of Ukraine’s damaged infrastructure, as well as the partnership between Ukrainian and German cities.

“It is also a matter of repairing destroyed infrastructure as quickly as possible, of repairing power grids, water pipes, heating systems, of eliminating supply bottlenecks. Many German partner cities are providing great help in this regard. Together with the President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy, I will take over the patronage of the Ukraine-Germany city partnership network. The more partnerships there are, the better it will be to get through the winter,” the President of Germany was quoted as saying.
