The UK imposed sanctions on Iran on the same day the EU did on October 20, 2022. The reason is the presence of evidence of Iran’s supply of kamikaze drones to Russia, which it uses to attack Ukraine. The decision is published on the website of the British government.

The following Iranian individuals and businesses were sanctioned:
- Chief of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Iran, Major General Mohammad Hossein Bagheri.
- Director of the Industrial Research Unit at the Ministry of Defense of Iran, Brigadier General Seyed Hojjatollah Qureishi.
- The head of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), Brigadier General Saeed Aghajan.
- Drone manufacturer company “Shahed Aviation Industries”.
“Iran’s support for Putin’s brutal and illegal war against Ukraine is deplorable. Today we are sanctioning those who have supplied the drones used by Russia to target Ukrainian civilians. This is clear evidence of Iran’s destabilising role in global security. These cowardly drone strikes are an act of desperation. By enabling these strikes, these individuals and a manufacturer have caused the people of Ukraine untold suffering. We will ensure that they are held to account for their actions,” said UK Foreign Secretary James Cleverly.
