We have never recorded so much evidence of war crimes, – UN representative

Most of these people were affected by the use of wide-area explosive weapons, including heavy artillery, rocket launchers, rocket attacks and airstrikes.

The organization emphasized that the actual figures of victims were much higher, as its representatives were unable to verify information from areas where active hostilities were ongoing. In addition, data on mass casualties in Mariupol of the Donetsk region, Izyum of the Kharkiv region, Lysychansk, Popasna and Siverskodonetsk of the Luhansk region have not yet been officially recorded.

“Hostilities continue to kill and injure civilians as well as destroy and damage civilian infrastructure. Attacks on civilian objects not only endanger the lives of civilians, but also leave them living in degrading conditions and undermine their rights to health, education, housing, food and water,” said Matilda Bogner, Head of HRMMU.

UN Under-Secretary-General for Political and Peacebuilding Affairs Rosemary DiCarlo emphasized that the international community had rarely collected as much evidence of war crimes and human rights violations as it is during the investigation of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

“Rarely, if ever, has the international community collected so much evidence of human rights violations, potential war crimes and other atrocities as they were happening. It is tragic that we have not been able to stop them. But it would be shameful if we were not able to ensure justice for the victims and their loved ones.”
