On August 22, 2022, EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell announced a mission to train the Ukrainian military in a country neighboring Ukraine.

Speaking at a press conference in the northern Spanish city of Santander, Borrell said the move will be discussed next week at a meeting of EU defense ministers in Prague.
“It seems reasonable that the war that is going on now and will continue requires efforts not only in the context of the supply of weapons. This is what is currently being discussed between the member states and will be discussed at the political level next week.”
According to the Representative, such a mission will not be stationed directly in Ukraine, but in a neighboring country.
“Of course, this will be a big mission, I think so. Any mission should correspond to the level of the conflict,” said the top EU diplomat, recalling that some states are already helping the Ukrainian military in training.
