In the event of a disaster at Ukraine’s nuclear plant, it is necessary to evacuate 400,000 people

The head of the Zaporizhzhia Oblast Military Administration said on August 16, 2022, that the situation in Energodar, which is temporarily occupied by the Russian Federation, is dangerous due to the constant shelling of the territory of the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant by Russian troops.

The Ukrainian authorities are developing an evacuation plan from the city and the risk zone of radiation contamination in the event of an accident at the ZNPP, taking into account the military situation.

“The situation is dangerous not only for the Zaporizhizha region (south of Ukraine – ed.). If we take the 50-km mandatory evacuation zone due to a possible accident at the nuclear power plant, then it is more than 200 thousand in our region and 200 thousand in the Dnipropetrovsk region. We are talking about the cities of Nikopol, Marganets, Energodar, Vasylivka, Dniprorudne and others,” Starukh emphasized.

Currently, the radiation condition at the ZNPP is stable, but Russian military continues to seize key administrative buildings in the city of Energodar.
